The History of KHATTS in Dominica

KHATTS—Ken’s Hinterland Adventure Tours and Transfer Service, was born in the late 1980s, at a time when Dominica was still largely undiscovered by mainstream tourism.

The island was known more for its rugged terrain than for tour buses, and travel into the interior demanded local knowledge, patience, and respect for nature.

KHATTS emerged from that reality, not as a business chasing trends, but as a service rooted in lived experience.

Founded by Ken George-Dill, a long-time resident of Dominica, KHATTS grew out of an intimate relationship with the island’s mountains, rivers, forests, and people.

Long before “eco-tourism” became a global term, Ken was already guiding visitors through rainforest paths, to hidden waterfalls, remote villages, and sacred natural spaces, sharing Dominica as it truly is, not as a manufactured product.

In its early years, KHATTS focused on reliable transportation and informal guiding, helping visitors and returning nationals navigate an island where roads were narrow, signs were few, and trust mattered more than brochures.

Word spread quickly, travelers valued not only the safety and dependability of the service, but also the storytelling, cultural insight, and personal care that accompanied every journey.

As Dominica’s tourism sector slowly evolved, KHATTS evolved with it, expanding from transfers into adventure tours, waterfall experiences, cultural excursions, and national park visits.

Yet the philosophy remained unchanged, small groups, flexible itineraries, respect for the environment, and an unhurried pace that allowed guests to feel the island rather than rush through it.

Over the decades, KHATTS weathered hurricanes, economic downturns, shifting tourism models, and global uncertainty.

What sustained the company was not scale, but credibility, earned through consistency, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility to both visitors and the land.

KHATTS became known as an operator that put people before profit and safety before spectacle.

Today, with over 35 years of continuous operation, KHATTS stands as one of Dominica’s most enduring and reliable adventure operators.

It represents a bridge between old Dominica and new, between tradition and discovery, guided by the belief that the island is not a commodity, but a living trust.

KHATTS is more than a tour company.
It is a legacy of stewardship, storytelling, and service, shaped by time, tested by nature, and sustained by love for Dominica.
